Kuala Lumpur, The International Advertising Association (IAA) Malaysia expresses deep concern over a creative entry allegedly shortlisted at the Chip Shop Drum Awards carrying the line “Make a Muslim eat pork.” Since then, The Drum has confirmed that the work has been withdrawn.
This episode serves as a reminder to both the industry and students that such work is not in the spirit of true creativity. It is an insensitive message that disrespects faith, identity, and human dignity. Work of this nature undermines the values our industry must uphold: respect, inclusivity, and responsibility.
Creativity is a powerful force for good. It should inspire, unite, and uplift, not divide or demean. “Freedom of expression does not remove responsibility. Shock for shock’s sake is not creative intelligence; it is provocation without purpose.”
At a time when the world is already showing signs of division and fracture, we must not fuel this further, let alone celebrate it through work of this nature.
IAA Malaysia stands firm: responsible creativity must always respect humanity.
